Beeswax is one of nature's most versatile materials. From candles that purify air to food wraps that replace plastic, here's how to make the most of this amazing hive product.
Rendering Beeswax
Before using beeswax, you need to clean it:
- Melt cappings/comb in water (double boiler method)
- Let cool—wax floats, debris sinks
- Scrape debris from bottom of wax disk
- Remelt and strain through cloth for pure wax
⚠️ Safety Note
Beeswax is flammable! Never melt directly over heat. Always use a double boiler or dedicated wax melter. Never leave melting wax unattended.
Beeswax Candles
Beeswax candles burn cleaner and longer than paraffin, with a natural honey scent.
Rolled Candles (Easiest)
- Cut beeswax sheet to desired size
- Warm slightly with hairdryer for flexibility
- Place wick along edge
- Roll tightly
- Press edge to seal
Dipped Candles
- Melt wax in tall, narrow container
- Dip wick, let cool 30 seconds
- Repeat until desired thickness
- Creates classic tapered candles
Molded Candles
- Pour melted wax into silicone or metal molds
- Center wick with holder
- Cool slowly to prevent cracking
🌿 Beeswax Food Wraps
Replace plastic wrap with reusable beeswax wraps:
- 1 oz beeswax, grated
- 1 tbsp jojoba oil
- 1 tbsp pine resin (for stickiness)
